Wee urges smallholders to get MSPO certification

The Star (27/07/2020) PONTIAN: The Primary Industries and Commodities Ministry urges oil palm smallholders to attain the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification as soon as possible.

Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng said that the MSPO certification was important as it would ensure palm oil produced by them was of high quality and that it would also received global recognition.

“Apart from ensuring high quality of the palm oil, the MSPO certificate will also allow smallholders to increase their earnings.

“We hope that smallholders will come forward to get the certification as soon as possible as this would benefit them,” he said in a press conference at the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) Pontian branch here yesterday.

Wee said there were 74,027 smallholders in Johor but only 25.11% of them had received MSPO certification.

In Pontian district, he said of the 9,970 smallholders, only 2,474 of them have received the certification.

“The MPOB will intensify their efforts to ensure all smallholders in Pontian get their MSPO certification as soon as possible.

“This includes conducting programmes with smallholders to inform them of the importance of getting the certification as well as assisting them in getting it,” he said.

MPOB director-general Dr Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir meanwhile said that about 85% of the 30,000ha that are oil palm plantations in Pontian was fully owned by smallholders.

“This shows that they play an important role in the industry.

“We hope that they can come forward to get the certification as soon as possible as factories may not be able to take oil palm from them without the certification in the future,” he said, adding that the cost to attain the certification was covered by the government.
