 Oil palm trees to be grown in 10,000 acres in Mancherial

Telangana Today (20/08/2020) Mancherial: Oil palm trees are going to be raised in 10,000 acres in Mancherial district in a phased manner and in 500 acres belonging to Chennur Assembly constituency on a pilot project basis this year.

District Horticulture Officer G Ugender told Telangana Today that an action plan was chalked for growing oil palm trees 10,000 acres in a phased manner. Already, 450 farmers were identified for raising the trees in 500 acres of Chennur Assembly constituency this year. Of them, 138 farmers paid their share Rs 28 out of the total cost Rs 112 per a sapling.

Over 10,000 saplings have been sent to the district. Plantation of the saplings was begun in March and 155 acres were covered so far. It is being carried out in the remaining fields. Farmers of Mancherial and Bellampalli Assembly constituency evinced interest in venturing into oil palm cultivation. Plans are afoot to encourage growing of oil palm trees in 500 acres of the two segments in the coming year.

Meanwhile, 50 acres of land situated Jaipur mandal centre was allocated to the Telangana State Cooperative Oilseeds Growers Federation Limited for erecting an oil palm seeds processing unit and a nursery to grow 3 lakh saplings.

Farmers will be able to sell their produce at the unit without needing to transport to neighboring districts once complete. The nursery enables the department of horticulture to supply sufficient saplings to growers.

A team of experts belonging to Indian Institute of Oil Palm Research surveyed the district for finding suitable mandals of Adilabad, Nirmal, Mancherial and Kumram Bheem Asifabad districts for growing the trees recently. The team assessed that the potential area of cultivation of the oil palm trees was 73,000 hectares in the erstwhile Adilabad district.

As per the findings of the survey, 33,520 hectares of Nirmal, 15,000 hectares in Adilabad was suitable for growing the treees, while 12,800 hectares in Mancherial and 12,221 hectares from Kumram Bheem Asifabad districts were conducive to raise the oil palm trees. Chennur MLA Balka Suman is passionately promoting the cultivation by regularly conducting awareness programmes.
