 â€˜Stop palm oil discrimination’

21.03.2019 (The Star Online) - KUALA LUMPUR: If the European Union (EU) continues to discriminate against palm oil, Malaysia will retaliate by boycotting certain European products, says Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“Yes, we think we will stop buying some European products. That is one thing that we can do,” he told reporters during a press conference at Parliament lobby yesterday.

On Tuesday, Dr Mahathir said the government had written to all the heads of EU governments saying that Malaysia would retaliate if they continued with this unfair discrimination against palm oil.

However, he did not disclose his plans should the EU continue to restrict palm oil, saying that he would make this known later.

On a separate matter, Dr Mahathir said the reason why the government was trying to save a Malaysian man from being sent to the gallows in Singapore was because the death sentence is viewed by Malaysians as a harsh punishment.

“Yes, we’re trying to save his life as we know that the people view the death sentence as too harsh. We hope that other countries will take the same stand.

“We are sad because the punishment of hanging should have been replaced with other punishments, just like what we are doing in certain cases,” he said.

On Tuesday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong said the government would submit a letter to Singapore urging it to commute the death sentence of a Malaysian man.Michael Garing of Kapit, Sarawak, was convicted of murder in Singapore in 2015 and is scheduled to be executed in Changi Prison tomorrow.
