The Times of India (25/10/2019) - Trichy: Federation of farmers’ association has sent a memorandum to the district collector of Trichy opposing the proposed regional comprehensive economic partnership (RCEP) free trade agreement.
Farmers have appealed to the government to take agriculture out of the RCEP as it would be a great threat to the farming sector. In a memorandum that has been sent to the district collector S Sivarasu, the coordinator of federation for safety food S Yoganathan has stated that the government of India is negotiating for bringing RCEP with 15 other countries for the agreement.
While listing the ill effects of the agreement, he stated that it would permanently bring down import duties on most agricultural commodities to zero.
Seed companies will get more power to protect their intellectual property rights and Indian farmers would be criminalized when they save and exchange seeds. The memorandum has asked the government to take the agriculture out of the agreement and safe guard the farmers in the country.
